Detroit, Michigan

Founded in 1701 by French explorer Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac as Fort Pontchartrain du Detroit, Detroit began as a strategic fur trading post along the river connecting Lake Erie and Lake St. Clair. Its name comes from the French word Detroit, meaning "strait." After the French and Indian War, it fell under British control in 1760, then became part of the United States following the American Revolution. Incorporated as a city in 1815, Detroit served as Michigan's capital until 1847 and played a vital role in the Underground Railroad, helping thousands of freedom seekers cross into Canada.

Detroit's transformation into the "Motor City" began in the late 19th century—Charles King drove the first successful horseless carriage on Detroit streets in 1894, and Henry Ford followed with his first car in 1896. The industry exploded: by 1915, Detroit was home to 48 auto manufacturers and 100 suppliers. Ford revolutionized manufacturing with the moving assembly line in 1913 and the famous five-dollar-a-day wage in 1914.

During World War II, Detroit earned the nickname "Arsenal of Democracy" for its massive production of military vehicles and equipment. Meanwhile, the Great Migration brought hundreds of thousands of Black Americans from the South, reshaping Detroit's cultural identity. The city also became a global cultural powerhouse—birthplace of Motown Records, home to legends like Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross, and Marvin Gaye, and the birthplace of techno music.

Detroit faced significant challenges in the late 20th century—population decline, industrial restructuring, and in 2013, the largest municipal bankruptcy in U.S. history. But today, Detroit is experiencing a period of renewal: investments in neighborhoods, infrastructure, and entrepreneurship are driving a comeback.
